Cork

suro01
From studying ancient scripts, we know that the use of cork goes back more than 4,500 years.

Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans used cork to seal amphora, thus conserving the quality of the goods. Gayo Plinio (the elder) remarks on its use in insulating houses and for shoe soles.

Cervantes mentions cork and its huge capacity as a thermal insulator in his book “Don Quixote”.

Over the centuries, new cork items, for no end of uses, have been developed, in some cases representing millions and millions of pieces.

Cork took another step up when, in about 1900, it started to be used in interior decoration as a byword for high quality. When, in 1955, cork wallpaper was born, it was an authentic innovation, opening up a  new dimension  in interior decoration. It provided a base to be either used or improved upon in other markets. Some hundreds of cork items were created with sales worldwide.

There are no two boards, nor two small pieces of cork, even from the same tree, that are exactly the same. That is the beauty of cork. (Imitations maintain the same design, lines or colour shade in all the sheets or rolls, but do not have any of the important, individual qualities of cork).
